Business travel is anything but fun and games, a new survey shows. Business travel tends to increase travelers’ levels of stress, burnout and anxiety.

Of the 200 international business travelers surveyed by International SOS and Kingston University, 45 percent said they were more stressed on work trips, while 31 percent said they experienced emotional exhaustion while traveling for work. A quarter said they experienced mental health issues like depression and anxiety.

A large number also reported physical health problems — 76 percent said they were less likely to eat a healthy diet or exercise while traveling for work and 73 percent said their sleep quality went down. A similar number said they worked longer hours while traveling.

“The business opportunities associated with international travel are undisputed, but research suggests that frequent travellers make three times as many claims for psychological treatment compared to those who don’t travel on business regularly,” said Kai Boschmann, director, International SOS Foundation.

“To safeguard business continuity, as well as fulfilling Duty of Care obligations, organisations need to better understand how they can protect the mental health and physical wellbeing of their employees while travelling.”
