Brazil’s Economic Center is on the Money When it Comes to Nightlife

Mixologist Gustavo Romulo has some wisdom to share: Namely, a cashew isn’t a nut, it’s a fruit. Most nights, he’s behind the bar at Caju — Portuguese for “cashew” — sharing insights about one of Brazil’s most popular culinary exports, getting a wow factor not only for his cocktails but for what the cashew apple looks like with its luscious red bottom attached.

There are lots of surprises like this to uncover in São Paulo, Brazil’s sprawling economic capital — many best enjoyed after the work day ends. At Caju the live music lineup highlights jazz late into the night to enjoy a wind-down with dinner. But for those who also seek a feast for the eyes, the city delivers.

One of São Paulo’s most recognizable buildings — Museu de Arte de São Paulo, or MASP — proves a treasure both inside and out. This Brutalist-style gallery hangs suspended over a pedestrian thoroughfare, the exterior as striking as the works inside. Paintings and sculptures (including some by Edgar Degas) are primarily suspended and not wall-anchored, affording 360-degree views and avoiding overcrowding.

Set aside a few hours to explore the Vila Madalena neighborhood, a section of which serves as a gallery in its own right. The murals that define a pedestrian-friendly path constantly change — in some cases in real time, thanks to an app that animates sanctioned graffiti when viewed through a phone camera. During the day it offers an Instagrammer’s paradise, but when the sun goes down, bistros, bars and clubs give the vibrant colors a run for their money with slamming samba. Those looking for a new outfit for a night out on the town need not look far: The flagship boutique for Brazil’s most iconic fashion brand, Farm Rio, spans three tropical-printed floors nearby.

São Paulo supports a large and vibrant gay scene and hosts one of the world’s biggest Pride parades. The Largo do Arouche and Consolação neighborhoods comprise the heart of the city’s gay nightlife, filled with a diverse array of venues for the LGBTQIA+ community, including clubs, bars, saunas and pop- up parties.

Night also makes an ideal time to hit up Ibirapuera, São Paulo’s version of Central Park. Lush tree canopies and coconut water in the shell await those up for a sunset stroll. Or opt for impressive views and bites at Vista Restaurante, offering up a 360-degree panorama of the city. The hyperlocal menu here features plates pulling from Brazil’s five diverse climates. From the restaurant it’s a short walk to Aristóteles Planetarium, whose flying saucer shape delights young and old.
