Boeing announced it will replace its 737s with a more efficient version of the plane: the 737 MAX, which will also add an array of comfort measures, like extra overhead bin space, a redesigned light switch less likely to be confused with the attendant button, and — shockingly — extra legroom.

But the biggest change is one passengers likely won’t notice: The planes have a redesigned winglet that reduces drag and a lighter-weight body, so they’ll be some of the most environmentally-friendly and efficient planes flying the skies. They’ll be more efficient even than the Boeing Dreamliner that launched last year. One hundred 737 MAX planes will reduce fuel usage by an astounding 250 million pounds each year.

For Boeing, that also means spending less on expensive jet fuel. The company will save $112 million on that 250 million pounds of fuel. The 737 MAX will also feature a quieter engine and, because it’s more efficient overall, can fly on longer routes.

It remains to be seen whether that cost savings will be passed onto the consumer, but if history is any indication, trends do show that lower fuel costs correspond with cheaper airfare.
