Boeing released a 2016 pilot and technician outlook projecting a future need for more than 600,000 commercial airline pilots; nearly 700,000 maintenance technicians; and more than 800,000 cabin crew. The outlook anticipates a 10.5 percent growth in pilot demand and 11.3 percent growth in technician demand. The numbers project growth over the next two decades. “The pilot and technician outlook has become a resource for the industry to determine demand for successful airline operations. Cabin crew are an integral part of operating an airline, and while Boeing does not train cabin crew like pilots and technicians, we believe the industry can use these numbers for planning purposes,” said Sherry Carbary, vice president, Boeing Flight Services. Broken down annually, the outlook shows a need for approximately 31,000 new pilots; 35,000 new technicians; and 40,000 cabin crew per year. The region leading the demand is Asia Pacific, accounting for 40 percent of the global requirements. Europe and North America both require about half Asia Pacific’s demand, with Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Russia and CIS needing significantly less.
