A prototype lavatory that uses ultraviolet light to kill germs is in the works at Boeing. The hands-free system disinfects all surfaces within the space in three seconds, killing 99.99 percent of germs and minimizing the growth of microorganisms. The ultraviolet light used is called Far UV light, unlike the UVA or UVB ultraviolet light used in tanning beds, and is completely safe for humans.

“We’re trying to alleviate the anxiety we all face when using a restroom that gets a workout during a flight. In the prototype, we position the lights throughout the lavatory so that it floods the touch surfaces like the toilet seat, sink and countertops with the UV light once a person exits the lavatory. This sanitizing even helps eliminate odors,” said Jeanne Yu, director of environmental performance, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

The system is undergoing further tests before being offered as a feature on airline aircraft. The new lavatory design which implements the hands-free disinfection system also includes all automatic faucets, soap dispensers, trash flaps, toilet lids and seats, hand dryers and door latches.
