You know you need to arrive at the airport early. And you know you could face a line for security screening. But passenger traffic can vary, so how much time to allow is anyone’s guess.

Unless you’re flying out of Houston, that is. Passengers now have access to real-time data on wait times for security checkpoints at George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby (HOU) airports. The Houston Airport System — which serves  more than 50 million passengers annually — recently launched an innovative tool that captures Bluetooth signals and displays how long it actually takes travelers to clear each checkpoint. By logging on to fly2houston.com, passengers can get a “traffic report” and estimate how much time they’ll need to clear security.

“We are using technology to enhance the customer experience,” said Lisa Kent, Houston Airport System chief information officer. “We’ve equipped all eight checkpoints at our five terminals at Bush Intercontinental and our single checkpoint at Hobby with this online tool.”

The online dashboard collects information from Bluetooth signals at checkpoints as passengers are processed. The program then monitors how much time the average person spends moving through the checkpoint and updates the website every 15 minutes with the latest data, displaying one of three color-coded levels for each checkpoint. Green indicates a wait time of less than 10 minutes; yellow, 10–15 minutes; and red, more than 15 minutes. Wait times in minutes are also indicated, as well as which checkpoints are closed. The data is integrated with other useful information on the website regarding departures, arrivals, connections and terminal maps.

The innovative technology was developed through a partnership with Georgia-based Infax, Inc., a leading provider of display and computing technology solutions for the aviation, mass transit and courthouse markets.
