Although it is the offseason for the Chicago Cubs, there is still plenty of activity around Wrigley Field. Before the frigid winter temperatures arrive, my friends and I enjoyed a day of outdoor holiday fun at Gallagher Way, an open-air entertainment area often called “Chicago’s town square.”
Located adjacent to Wrigley Field on the west side, the Ice Rink at Gallagher Way is an 8,000-square-foot ice rink open to skaters of all ages through Feb. 16. Skate rentals are available, as are skating lessons. They also have curling lessons. I am far from graceful on skates, but I still had a good time scuffling around the rink trying to keep up with my more skilled friends.
Every Tuesday, the Chicago Red Line Synchronized Teams perform special figure skating exhibitions. On occasion, you might even see Cubs mascot Clark the Bear, like my sister Nancy did. It pains me to admit that a big clunky mascot actually skated better than I did. Maybe I’ll sign up for the skating lessons there in January.
Ice skating is only part of the action at the Winterland at Gallagher Way. Running through the end of this year, Christkindlmarket Wrigley is an authentic, German-style outdoor market. The free open market features beverages, food, other products (like ornaments) and performances coming together to enhance the holiday experience.
With the iconic Wrigley Field as the backdrop, this is such a unique opportunity. There are several other pop-up ice rinks around Chicago, but Winterland at Gallagher Way is a one-stop destination for skating, shopping, dining and entertainment, all while looking at the second-oldest Major League Baseball stadium. I wouldn’t make a trip to any other rink, but I always make it a full day at Gallagher Way. Even in the winter, you can’t beat fun at the old ballpark!
