During a recent visit to Sonoma wine country, my husband, Kevin, and I decided to explore beyond the sprawling vineyards and check out the coast. We set our course for Bodega Bay. It was a perfect late-summer day for the hour-long drive along winding roads. I didn’t realize it until later, but several scenes for the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock thriller The Birds were filmed in Bodega Bay.
We decided to switch things up on the way back to Sonoma, heading northeast to the tiny town of Occidental where we enjoyed a late lunch on the front porch at Howard’s Station Café. While perusing our map over lunch, we pinpointed our next stop: Guerneville. I had my heart set on dipping my toes in the Russian River, which passes right through the town center.
Our meandering, circular route took had us back in Sonoma by early evening: Just in time to sip a well-earned glass of wine on the deck of our rented bungalow.
