Nestled in Israel’s third-largest city, the Baha’i Gardens are a beautiful intersection of horticulture, history and religious tradition. The Gardens in Haifa are comprised of nineteen terraces connected by a lengthy staircase on sloping Mount Carmel. These geometrically-inspired gardens are quite easy on the eye. The Baha’i Gardens are open seven days a week, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Be sure not to come on a Jewish holiday, such as Yom Kippur, or any Baha’i Holy Days, for the gardens may not be open. The Baha’i faith is a tradition dating back to the 19th century which emphasizes a unitary deity. Of course, not just followers of the Baha’i tradition can enjoy the gardens — over half a million visitors see the gardens each year, most of whom are not observants. This intersection of faith and beauty is the perfect vehicle for learning a bit about a new way of life while still being respectful. Sixteen kilometers north of the Gardens in Haifa lie a similar set of gardens in the slightly smaller city of Akko. The Gardens in Akko feature similar designs, with unique sets of patterns in each. These gardens are accessible via highway from Haifa, by a short drive down the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
