I happened to have an hour or so between meetings recently in downtown Dallas, Texas, so I took the opportunity to visit the infamous Dealey Plaza, the location of the assassination of John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963, one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. A 20th-century history buff, I admit to having a heightened sense of awareness and interest on this subject. That said, several things struck me upon my visit. Television fails to capture and therefore convey the size and scope of the small radius where this horrific event took place. In truth, it’s a very compact area, with the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository where Lee Harvey Oswald shot the president positioned perfectly with unobstructed views of the motorcade coming and somewhat obstructed views of it going; a point on which I will touch further in a moment. As we all know, Oswald was identified and to many forensically reaffirmed to be the lone shooter. However, upon visiting Dealey Plaza, a heightened feeling of “common sense” suddenly overwhelmed me. By layout and documented footage, the public square of Dealey Plaza lends itself to a multitude of assassins, not just one from a somewhat obstructed perch witnessing the motorcade moving away. This is a far more difficult shot than if Oswald would have taken the only shots when the president’s motorcade made its way towards the Book Depository. The motorcade was considerably closer to the Book Depository and slowed to make its final left turn before the President was ultimately shot dead adjacent to the grassy knoll … ah, the grassy knoll! Oswald’s shots make “common sense” if at least another shooter was involved, to which of course Dealey Plaza lends itself. The fenced-in area adjacent to the grassy knoll combined with Oswald’s perch make for an almost ideal triangular, professionally planned kill zone. Remember, a multitude of witnesses place the smell of gun powder at street level, heard shots ring out from behind the grassy knoll and now, at least according to some, two distinct flashes were seen originating from this fenced-off area. There are many other inconsistencies and holes in this investigation, but society demands proof — hard evidence of a crime and how it was ultimately perpetrated. I, on the other hand, believe the lack of proof or evidence does not necessarily disqualify a reasonable theory; it simply means no proof or evidence surfaced to support the theory, or in my case and others, no proof or evidence to support common sense. If you have the opportunity, go to Dealey Plaza and judge for yourself. — David Katz, director of sales & marketing
