Here at Global Traveler, we have been interviewing prospects for several positions. Can I offer a little advice for those searching for employment in these difficult times?
- Dress for Success is a book written by John T. Molloy in 1975, and nothing has changed. Molloy studied the effect clothing has on a person’s success. Those who dressed for the next higher position (better than the position they were interviewing for) did better financially.
- Follow up when you have an interview. Follow up with a thank-you email and a personal, handwritten note. Indicate your thanks for the interview and your interviewer’s time and include any other information that will help convince the interviewer that you are the right candidate.
- Stay away from words such as “cool,” “yeah” and other slang.
- Be prepared. Bring samples or create something you can leave behind, perhaps even something customized for the interviewer or the position. Learn about the company by reading its website or blog. Google the company and your interviewer.
- Talk it up. Pregnant pauses are for stage, not for interviews.
