As someone new to golf, finding a course that is affordable and uncrowded can be quite difficult this time of year, as nearly every golf course in Southwest Florida is packed with experienced golfers who don’t want to share the course with beginner golfers. Who knew finding a course would be so difficult when you are surrounded by them? One golf course that met our criteria is The Bluffs Golf Course, located in Hardee County in a small town called Zolfo Springs.

As a resident of Port Charlotte, the golf course for me is nearly an hour drive inland. During the drive to Zolfo Springs, you get a glimpse of Old Florida and the various cattle ranches. Those that live on the coast may see this as out-of-the-way, but the peace of mind the course offers is well worth it.

The clubhouse offers an old-school, simple atmosphere. Concession stands offer bottled beer and nonalcoholic drinks as well as sandwiches. The club staff has always been kind and welcoming.

The 18-hole golf course has many long par 4s and 5s, making it a fun course to practice your game. This course allows me to use my favorite club (the driver) on several holes. Many holes are challenging, as water is nearby.

The back nine of this course is truly stunning. Many large oak trees are draped with Spanish moss, giving that Old Florida feel. The large oaks also provide great shaded areas — especially appreciated on warmer days.

The Bluffs Golf Course is a great place for those looking to practice and learn a new hobby while also getting treated with respect. A golf course like The Bluffs can be quite difficult to find, especially in the Southwest Florida area.
