Lately, I heard several people talk about coloring books used during flights by children and adults as a calming activity. When I heard softball legend Monica Abbott just released her coloring book, I knew it was the perfect time to talk travel with her.
As a longtime fan of softball, I was well aware of Abbott before I met her during her time with National Pro Fastpitch. Seeing her pitch up close was an entirely different experience, though. She was one of the most dominant athletes ever in any sport.
Last year Abbott retired from active play. Since then, she published her autobiography Rise and Shine, announced she and her husband were expecting their first child, and now has a coloring and activity book.
As my recent Talking Travel interview guest Karen Schaler discussed, coloring books are making a comeback. In this age of technology, coloring books are becoming increasingly popular, and not just for children. Especially on flights, coloring books can keep youngsters busy, but they are also used by adults, although they are different types of coloring books.
Abbott’s My Softball Dream Coloring Book is also a great way for youngsters to learn about being on a team, practice and other parts of softball. It’s a mix of information, education and entertainment. It’s part of the education arm of Abbott’s platform, which includes Abbott’s A-List, instructional videos and her MA14 Scholarship. It’s also part of Abbott’s way of continually growing the game. Children don’t have to be softball fans to enjoy My Softball Dream Coloring Book, but they might become ones because of it. I’ve known Abbott long enough to know if she is involved, it’s a winner and My Softball Dream Coloring Book is sure to please any child.

As a multi-Olympian and international pitcher, Abbott discussed life in Japan, including adjustments on and off the pitcher’s mound; her favorite places; and how living there impacted her. She also gave advice for a first-timer in Japan. As someone who spent so much time in that country, Abbott delivers a unique perspective.

May 30, 2025By-the-cabin Yachting Redefines the Cruise Experience
I wish this day could last forever!” my windswept 9-year-old exclaimed, his voice soaring over the Mediterranean. He gripped the helm of a Bali 4.6 sailing catamaran off the coast of Marseille, his sun- bleached hair whipping in the salty breeze. The scent of the sea mingled with the aroma of warm baguettes drifting from the Côte d’Azur shoreline. Our captain, a seasoned sailor, subtly adjusted course, letting my son feel the exhilarating pull of the wind against the sails. As the waves lapped against the hull, I realized this was no ordinary vacation — this was freedom, unfiltered.
