I traveled to Antigua a few days before snowstorm Jonas. While I looked forward to escaping the cold and snow for a few days, I did not anticipate a cancelled flight and extra time on the Caribbean island. My JetBlue flight left the Thursday before the storm was scheduled to hit, with a return flight booked three days later. I was convinced the storm wouldn’t be as severe as the meteorologists predicted. I was wrong. While I enjoyed breakfast on an outdoor patio wearing shorts, I received messages from friends and family in the Northeast saying, “We can’t open our front door because of the snow.” I was still — naively — convinced my Sunday flight wouldn’t be affected. I was wrong. Just as I went to check in for my flight, I received a message saying it was cancelled. JetBlue flies its Antigua (ANU) – New York (JFK) route on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. My group was able to rebook on the Thursday flight. I took this time to enjoy the amenities of the hotel, Blue Waters Resort, and a quick trip to St. John’s. Answering emails while overlooking the ocean was a welcome change, too. At the last minute, we received notice of openings on the Tuesday flight to New York. I quickly packed my bags, took one last walk on the beach and, within no time, we were on our way to the airport. After hearing horror stories of travelers stuck for days and sleeping in airports, I felt lucky that my delay was brief and it allowed me to spend some extra time in Antigua.
