Not all travel blogs are about exotic destinations, but if you let your mind wander and got lost in the scenery displays, you may have felt that you weren’t in Somerville, N.J., this weekend. Yesterday some of my family and I attended the Somerset County (N.J.) 4-H Trainmaster Annual Winter Train Show.

The main attraction was a 40-by-60-foot, continuously-run train track with trains running through scenery displays made by the 4-H youth members. Some of the displays were quaint holiday villages, some were bustling towns and some were Pacific islands with a backdrop of blue sky. I liked the burning house with cotton balls as billowing smoke and flickering amber lights.

The true highlight was seeing the old men and the young boys discussing trains — their favorites, how it was in the old days, and real and toy trains.

In case you weren’t into trains — and there were definitely those in attendance who were not — there were 60 craft vendors, pizza, hot dogs and a therapy pet display of bunnies.
