I recently received a copy of the book Soar, written by Captain Tom Bunn, MSW, LCSW. The cover of the book reads: “The breakthrough treatment for fear of flying,” and “No matter what you’ve tried before, you can soar,” Lofty claims. Were they true?

As someone not at all scared to fly, I’m often intrigued when I meet people who are terrified of airplanes. Maybe it’s such a part of my day-to-day that I never second-guess the process, but in my opinion, you are more likely for catastrophe to strike on the ground than during any flight. But I’ve been in plenty of situations where I see someone on the airplane exhibit the telltale signs of anxiety and panic. 

Bunn is a licensed therapist and airline captain, and he approaches the fear of flying scientifically, explaining the nervous system, its reactions and step-by-step exercises that can help conquer the anxiety associated with flying. He also discusses how flying works, the ways in which it is safe and ways to plan your flight for maximum enjoyment.
