Singapore is one of the world’s financial centers, largest ports and has one of the highest per capita incomes, so it’s no wonder it’s an epicenter for business travel. There are also no visa requirements for the United States and most European countries for short-term business trips, making it a convenient stop when necessary.
When traveling to Singapore on business, one should be aware of the proper etiquette and customs in order to respect the culture of Singaporeans.
Respect Your Elders
In Singapore, age and seniority are highly respected; introduce the most important members of your team first and respect the eldest of the group. Avoid publically debating or disagreeing with a superior.
Business Cards
When accepting someone’s business card, it’s routine to receive it with both hands, thoroughly look it over and make eye contact with the individual out of respect. Business cards represent a person’s identity and should be handled with care.
Slow and Steady
Singaporeans are slower in business dealings, as trust needs to be built over time. This also applies to listening etiquette; always wait at least 10 seconds after someone finishes speaking to show you are taking what he or she said into consideration.
Put Your Best Hand Forward
The left hand is considered unclean in several religions in Singapore. Avoid eating and touching things with your left hand when you can. Similarly, feet are considered unclean, so touching anything with your feet or pointing the sole of your foot at anyone can be seen as an insult.
Never Point Your Finger or Foot
Pointing at anyone with your forefinger is considered a rude gesture; use your entire right hand instead if needed.
