This past weekend I explored a greener part of Philadelphia I have not previously visited: West Fairmount Park. One of the largest green spaces in the United States, Fairmount Park includes more than 9,200 acres of trails, woodlands and wetlands. The purpose of the visit was to enjoy Sunday afternoon yoga with two Global Traveler colleagues — Kim Krol, managing editor, and Katie Skrzek, digital director — inside Fairmount Park Horticulture Center. Kim came up with the idea after browsing a Philadelphia Magazine list highlighting unique fitness and foodie events taking place in Philadelphia this month, and Katie and I were happy to tag along for a stretch session in the historic arboretum. Built for the Bicentennial celebration in 1976, the Horticulture Center is a modern exhibition hall and greenhouse boasting beautiful tropical plants and statues nestled in the lush landscape. Local teacher Emile Sorger from Amrita Yoga guided us through an all-levels class involving a series of stretches and breathing techniques designed to leave us feeling relaxed and reinvigorated. With greenery surrounding us, the setting was serene and calming, and I appreciated the chance to practice in an environment with a balmy temperature and elements that made me feel like I was outdoors. Located away from the hustle and bustle of the city but still within the boundaries of Philadelphia, Fairmount Park offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature both indoors and outdoors. Dotting the grounds outside the Horticulture Center are flowers, trees, a small pond, a creek and wetlands, while other sites in the park include perennial gardens and a butterfly garden. Next time you visit the City of Brotherly Love, take a stroll or head out for a picnic in the park to enjoy the quiet natural landscape Philadelphia has to offer. — Monique Barrett, eFlyer editor/associate editor
