Every day I learn something new, or I am at least reminded of something I once learned. I also love the people I get to work with because they always bring to my attention this “something” learned. Recently, it was that March 8th was International Women’s Day. I have not really heard of this in the States so much, but in my travels throughout Europe and Asia, the celebration is more commonly recognized. I was reminded of International Women’s Day as an associate told me of Kingfisher Airlines who celebrated March 8th by operating select flights with an all-woman flying crew. I thought this was a fabulous way to recognize professional women in the travel industry. According to a Kingfisher press release: Dr. Vijay Mallya, Chairman and CEO, Kingfisher Airlines Limited said: “8th March is celebrated as International Women’s Day worldwide, with a view to recognizing, celebrating and highlighting the economic, political and social achievements of women in our society. Kingfisher Airlines has always been proud of the fact that we are an airline that respects and cares for our women guests and we have stood by this belief. So whether it’s the Companion Offer on Kingfisher First or the valets at all airports, we have always strived to go the extra mile. And this International Women’s Day, we make a statement of our philosophy to the world.” Growing up in the US in the 1980s, I often forget the sacrifice generations made before me so I could achieve what I do today. It was still less than 90 years ago in this country that women were given the right to vote! And women’s suffrage still had a long way to go. Now, it is great to see a woman in this historic presidential campaign fight to lead the most powerful country in the world. Whether I agree with this woman 100% or not, is a different story for a different blog, but I am also very happy we have the freedoms to agree to disagree. It also makes me smile to see the achievements of women halfway across the globe and around the world like we see in the photo below (click on the photo to view a larger image)! -Alex Young, vice president and associate publisher
