On my fall trip to Ukraine, I split my time between Kyiv and Lviv. Admittedly, I didn’t know too much about the destination, and my visit was definitely eye-opening. One such spot on my itinerary was Mezhyhirya Residence, nicknamed the “Museum of Corruption.” The estate outside Kyiv is where now-exiled Viktor Yanukovych lived while he was prime minister and then president. Now a museum, it serves as a testament to Yanukovych’s ultra-luxurious lifestyle.
Yanukovych lived on the estate from 2002 until he fled the country Feb. 21, 2014, during the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution. While the estate and the surrounding land flip-flopped ownership over the course of its life, it returned to state ownership in 2014. The 350 acres include a yacht pier, an equestrian club, a shooting range, a tennis court and other facilities. Yanukovych’s former exotic car collection is displayed. The ownership of the land under Yanukovych was contested.
Today the grounds are open to enjoy, stroll, wander and discover. Guided tours of the residence are also available. Here are some pictures from my visit.
