Wow, I cannot believe it is September already. With the summer months behind us, many people are hitting the road this weekend to see the season out with style and enjoy the Labor Day holiday. Where are you headed? As has been the tradition the last two Labor Day weekends, I’m heading to my friend’s beach house in Ocean City, New Jersey. I started my fall semester graduate school class on Tuesday evening, so this weekend is my last hurrah before the read-a-book-a-week/write-a-paper-a-week shuffle begins with regularity. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to a getaway. Traditionally, the AAA makes predictions regarding Labor Day travel. This year, the agency predicts 31.5 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home, which is actually a decrease of 2.4 percent over those traveling last year. The AAA defines the “official” holiday weekend as Thursday, Sept. 1 through Monday, Sept. 5. And just how will those 31.5 million travel? The majority, 87 percent, or 27.3 million people, will drive; I’m included in that bunch. Another 2.5 million, about 8 percent, will fly; GT’s own Olivia Falcione will be in that group as she jets off to Las Vegas for the weekend. And the remaining people, 1.7 million of them, will use other modes, including trains and watercraft.
