This past week, the Global Traveler staff were all chatting, and we somehow stumbled upon a discussion of what our favorite travel gadgets are. Some people mentioned loving packing cubes, others mentioned always carrying an adapter with them. Some people even said the thing they never leave home without when traveling overseas is a pen. Simple enough.
As I will be traveling to Hawaii tomorrow (and some of you might not have purchased your holiday gifts yet!), I thought this might be an opportune time to share some of my favorite travel necessities and hear about yours, as well.
Whenever I take long flights, I always wear layers. For someone who prefers sweatpants over jeans, Lululemon is key. This is a great brand, both for men and women, that makes you looks stylish and put together but keeps you comfortable on long flights.
- For women, a great layering piece is the off the mat jacket.
- For men, the mission pants are extremely practical.
When packing, I make sure to separate my clothes with Eagle Creek’s packing cubes. This way I know where my pajamas are and can pull them out the minute I get to my hotel room after a long flight. Eagle Creek makes various cube sizes: one for socks, another for shirts, and many more.
- You can find the various sizes here.
When sitting on a long flight, the last thing I want to do is fish through my bag to find various cords, my phone, iPad, etc. The Cocoon Grid-It organizer is a perfect solution for this. Just slip it in and out of your handbag or briefcase for an easy fix.
- The Grid-It comes in different colors and sizes. For a tutorial on how to use it, visit here.
I hope this short list helps all of my fellow holiday travelers this season. Do any of you have favorite travel accessories we should know about at Global Traveler? Also, my favorite travel store, Flight 001 has a website I suggest you visit as soon as possible!
Happy Holidays, everyone!

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
