Essential New Orleans Food

by Katie Skrzek

Jan 18, 2018

New Orleans is my husband’s favorite city and a place we love to travel to together. Since we’ve visited the Crescent City several times together, we now have some favorite spots. For live music, we like Balcony Music Club. Arnaud’s French 75 Bar is a must for classic cocktails. We love to stroll through the picturesque Garden District. However, a trip to New Orleans isn’t complete without visiting our favorite food spots.

With a daily rotating donut menu, tasty sliders and selection of coffee drinks, District Donuts quickly became one of our favorite places in the city. It’s often our first stop from the airport. For a less sweet breakfast, we love Mother’s Restaurant. Known for baked ham, my go-to at Mother’s is a ham and egg biscuit. The flaky biscuit is topped with tender ham and egg cooked to your preference. The sandwich comes with a side of blackberry jam, which offers a sweet note to the savory dish.

While many places throughout the city serve amazing fried chicken, we like Coop’s Place. Specializing in Cajun dishes, the fried chicken is spiced with a special Bayou blend. The platter comes with house-made jambalaya, so you can experience two New Orleans classics in one sitting. Keep in mind, the bar and restaurant holds to a strict 21-and-older policy, even just for food. Po’boys are another iconic New Orleans item. The sandwich typically consists of roast beef or fried seafood on a long roll, topped with lettuce, tomato and remoulade dressing. You can get a good po’boy anywhere, but get a great one from Verti Marte. The small convenience store with a food counter is popular among locals and open 24/7.

I’m getting hungry for my next trip and looking forward to discovering new favorite spots.
