Over the weekend I unleashed my inner artist on the sidewalks of Highland Park, Illinois. Armed with my 12-pack of sidewalk chalk, I joined many others for Draw Together, a fun neighborhood event held in and around The Art Center.
Draw Together is a community-based art event and fundraiser. The event was meant to draw the community together in a whimsical way centered around The Art Center.
Participating fledgling artists were invited to decorate their sidewalks or a sidewalk square at The Art Center. It also went well beyond the area, as chalk artists from Arizona, Israel and other locations joined the fun. Street painter, muralist and fine artist Nate Baranowski was on hand to provide artist tips and encouragement while also creating a unique design for the day.
Later in the evening the fun continued with a live outdoor event with food, cocktails and music under a tent at The Art Center. Celebrity guest host Zoraida Sambolin served as Mistress of Ceremonies. Guests saw a preview of the exciting and groundbreaking gallery exhibit Ephemera: The Power of Impermanence. Hubbard Street Dance Chicago provided more entertainment via a special video presentation. There is a wonderful video of Draw Together on The Art Center of Highland Park YouTube channel.
The Art Center Highland Park provides an arts education to Highland Park and surrounding areas. A not-for-profit visual arts organization since 1960, it is a community hub as well as an education center offering more than 450 classes of all forms of art creativity.
By day, the sidewalks of Highland Park came alive with colorful chalk art, from simple sketches to elaborate renderings. At night, all came together for a relaxing evening with the community. The weather was perfect. Actually, one might say the whole day was picture-perfect.

Head south to Texas for Halloween fun and enjoy a warm-weather extension this fall. In Austin, elegance, history and spooky tales are the themes at The Driskill. The hotel is said to be frequented by the spirit of Jesse Driskill, who constructed the property in 1886. The scent of cigar smoke in public spaces allegedly announces his presence. A life-sized painting of Jesse is displayed in the hotel lobby, and guests can stay on the lookout for him during the daily 4 p.m. history tour.
