Eating an entire meal in complete darkness at Unsicht-Bar, a dark restaurant in Berlin, was an experience of a lifetime I will never forget. When I first arrived at the restaurant, the room was gently illuminated, allowing my dining companions and I to choose what we wanted to eat for the night. There were five menus: vegetarian, beef, river and sea, poultry and surprise. This was not an ordinary menu, as each menu had a riddle to go along with the appetizer, soup, main course and dessert. Deciding was extremely difficult because I never knew exactly what I was going to get. Eventually I chose what I wanted, and the waiter took us in to the dining room. Holding on to the hands of the people in my party, I walked into a room in complete darkness. After what seemed to be an endless walk, we finally made it to our table. The waiter guided each of us into our chairs and explained how the table was set using the clock analogy; for example, the spoons were located at twelve o’clock. When my food was served, I had to rely on my other four senses to help me detect what exactly I was eating. It took much longer than normal to eat my meal because I had no idea where everything was on the plate, and I eventually gave up trying to find my water glass after spilling it two times. After the appetizer, soup and main course, the dessert finally came, which was by far the messiest course of them all but also the most delicious. After the meal was over, I held on to the hands of my party, leaving the dark room with a messy table feeling extremely satisfied. When I re-entered the gently illuminated room, I was told what I ate for each course of the meal, dumbstruck learning I actually liked certain foods I never thought I did. Unsicht-Bar, the largest dark restaurant in the world, has multiple locations throughout Germany, offering diners the choice of three- or four-course meals. Dining at the restaurant was an unforgettable and unique experience. — Fiona McPadden, intern
