Hungry for dim sum, my husband and I decided to check out a place we’ve heard good things about near us in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Brother Seafood Restaurant opens at 10 a.m., daily, perfect for dim sum brunch.

The restaurant was busy on the Sunday morning during our visit. We grabbed a table and started perusing the extensive dim sum menu. The restaurant has another full menu of entrées, but we wanted to experience the dim sum offerings during our first visit. With more than 60 dishes to choose from, we decided to sample several different small plates and a larger dish. There were many adventurous items on the menu, including beef intestine, chicken feet and jelly fish, though we decided to stick to the more basic items for our first visit.

The plates arrived as they were prepared. Up first: shrimp dumpling, pork shiu mai and a pork pastry. My favorite out of this group was the shrimp dumpling, even though the delicate dough fell apart as I ate. Next, we had beef rice roll and beef congee. This was my first time trying congee, and I wasn’t disappointed. The dish was blander than the others, but it was a nice break from the bold, salty flavors of the first dishes we tried. The last plates to arrive were my favorites: cold cucumber with chili oil and Shanghai pork dumplings. The cucumbers were both spicy and refreshing. The dumplings were reminiscent of the popular soup dumplings. While messy, they were rich with flavor.

Since we only had a small sampling of the dim sum menu at Brother Seafood Restaurant, we’re already looking forward to our next visit.
