I was recently reminded of how much the experience of domestic economy-class travel has diminished over the years when I flew from Philadelphia to Los Angeles last month. My seatmate, in his early twenties, called out to a friend in another row with excitement to let him know the sodas were complimentary. He clearly did not remember the days of in-flight meals and movies on long-haul flights (as challenging as they may have been to see down the aisle). It is easy to be nostalgic for the past; however, I think most of us adapted our expectations to the new world of travel. So when I boarded my return flight with Delta Air Lines (not the same airline as the trip out) from Los Angeles to New York, I have to say, they are really setting themselves apart. The Boeing 767 aircraft felt brand-new, complete with video screens for each economy seat. Headphones were complimentary, as was the extensive selection of movies and television shows. Again I admired, as I have in a past blog, the bright and stylish uniforms of the Delta flight attendants. However, the thing that set the tone and made this different from any other domestic flight I have ever taken was their new (as of January 2014) in-flight safety video: [youtube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eduNjwNvcH4[/youtube] How soon did you notice something different with this video? I must admit it was the first time I watched one of these videos from start to finish in as long as I can remember and, no question, the first time I laughed at one.Why not have fun with it and get people to actually pay attention?
