By the end of the day today, the Sweet 16 of the NCAA March Madness Tournament will be set. Always an exciting time of year for the sport’s world, the NCAA March Madness Tournament provides four days of non-stop entertainment through the first two rounds. The whole country seems to be captivated by the stories of underdogs taking down giants and their opportunity to compete against their friends in pools to determine who has the best brackets.

Rooting for the little guy to triumph over greater odds is one of the oldest dramatic stories and was played out this year as the David of the Mercer Bears beat the Goliath of Duke. Other notable upsets so far have been 12th-seed Harvard Crimson winning only its second tournament game ever over fifth-seed Cincinnati Bearcats and Dayton making it past traditional powerhouses Ohio State and Syracuse to vie for a spot in the elite 8.

With so many games to pick, and so many upsets a part of the tradition of the tournament, getting your bracket busted by a Dayton or a Mercer is inevitable. Correctly picking the first round is an extreme long shot, and completing a perfect bracket is next to impossible. One man came closer than most this year, getting the first 36 games right by sheer luck. If he continued his streak, he still would not have had a chance at the billion dollar prize through Yahoo as he did not enter correctly; however, it is unlikely that feat will ever be achieved against such long odds. Still, when filling out my bracket next year, I’ll be imagining how many around-the-world tickets I could purchase with a billion-dollar windfall!
