Daily Routine

Do you have a daily routine? Can’t start the morning off without that cup of coffee from the cart guy on your designated street corner? Do you get to work, read your paper, then download emails? Or does your schedule change every day? During my college summers, I used to commute from Long Island to Manhattan on the LIRR to be a summer paralegal at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen and Katz. I found it amazing that by the end of the summer I was able to predict the every move of complete strangers on the morning commute because I had observed and learned their routines. I met people who commuted on the train for years, sat in the same seat every day, talked to the same people about the exact same topics every morning, even played a poker game from time to time, but didn’t know more than the person’s first name!  I also used to go for a run in Central Park in the morning (short lived), but even then, when I left at the same time and developed my routine, I knew who I would be running into around almost every bend! Fairly impressive, I thought, in a city of 10 million. Lately, I’ve been trying to adjust my morning routine again, but I think I will be reverting back. For those that know me well or have worked with me awhile, I am just not a morning person and do not enjoy waking up any earlier than I have to. Let me clarify: I will wake up as early as need be and I am very productive in the morning, just not my usual friendly self, to put it nicely. When I get up, I like to wake up and, well, not talk to anyone the first 20 minutes . . . it’s a trait that runs in my family. During that time I will eat my breakfast while looking at my emails to chart the course of the day, but most likely will not communicate with the outside world. I’ll read the paper and drink my coffee. When the coffee is done, then I am ready to take on the world! I would recommend everyone try to stir up your daily routine from time to time; you never know what could happen, but sometimes old habits die hard!  Alexandra Young, associate publisher
