Tonight marks a very special confluence of two of the world’s great faith traditions, an event that occurs only every two decades or so: It is the first night of Hanukkah and it is Christmas Eve (theologically, Christmas begins at sundown). That seems to hold special significance in this year when there has been so much rancor, strife and violence around the world between those who perceive “others” as a threat, as less than themselves, as not deserving of respect and dignity.

Global travelers know better than most how much unites us and how little separates we humans from each other at our cores. They see the powerful good that can be wrought from reaching out and working together while celebrating the unique gifts every culture, every faith, every person brings to humanity.

My prayer for all on this special night is that it will usher in a year of greater understanding, tolerance and peace between all peoples. May each of us, as we go out into the world, be conscious of our ability to play a part in building up the connections that can strengthen us, and do our part to heal the divisions. I hope each of you may spend this holiday season with those you love, doing what you love, and may you count abundantly the blessings in your life.
