Did you know that July 2012 was the hottest month on record in the continental United States? It looks like August is heading towards the same. Living in southern California and growing up in “The Valley,” I am used to hot summers, but this past week or so has been grueling. In the past five days the weather has been between 98–109 degrees. On Thursday the thermometer in my car read 113 degrees!
To avoid the heat, my friends, family and neighbors are all flocking to water. The temperatures are much cooler by the ocean, and it offers a perfect place to meet up and barbecue on the beach. This weekend I will brave the traffic and head into Malibu, Calif., for some beach time. Like being on a cruise, you need to arrive early to find a decent place on the beach. Setting up camp and laying out your towel before 12 p.m. is a must! There are tons of beaches along the coast that are perfect for a family day, but I will go to Zuma this weekend for some sun; dolphin-spotting; people-watching (more specifically the surfers); and to pig out on fruit, chips and a big cooler of water.
