World Tour Wrap-Up

May 22, 2016

I’m back from my two-week world tour and strangely enough, I’m glad to be back. My first week was spent in Dubai during Arabian Travel Market, my first time. A few things to note for next year … unlike U.S. exhibits which open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Emiratis like to sleep in, and no day started before 12 p.m., ended at 6 p.m. I can appreciate that as these trade shows mean extremely long days in addition to events in the evenings. However, it’s always good to catch up with familiar faces and make new contacts. These shows are important if you want to build valuable relationships with your clients. I think the opportunity should never be missed. My weekend started in Uppsala, Sweden. It was the same weekend as Walpurgis, referred to as “Sista Apri” or “Valborg” in Swedish. It is a big celebration of spring arriving in Sweden. Celebrations include herring lunches, university students floating in Fyris River, donning of caps, parties and much more. I can happily admit I participated in the herring lunch, watching funny students in their floats in the river and, of course, day parties until my nap which turned into resigning the second half of the day. These people know how to have fun! Next on the itinerary was a quick and much-needed trip to Istanbul to see my parents for two days before catching my flight on Turkish Airlines. Although short, it’s always good to see them. In addition, I rented a car in Turkey; and if you are familiar with how bad the traffic is in Istanbul, you’ll be impressed to know I drove in the city with no issues. I’m proud of myself for it. Now all eyes on Iceland for August. A quick online search uncovered there is SO MUCH to do there. Until then, I’ll fill you in on my domestic trips coming up soon. Until then, travel away! — Banu Yilmaz, advertising director
