At Home in Wilmington

by intern

Jul 6, 2012

I am always eager to go home to Wilmington, N.C. The people are friendly, the food is amazing, and it doesn’t hurt that we have a beautiful beach. I know most people are proud of where they come from, but I think my southern pride is on a whole other level. Wilmington sits on the southeastern tip of North Carolina. My childhood was filled with fishing, hurricanes, the North Carolina Azalea Festival and family.

Wilmington has an attractive downtown area located on the Cape Fear River. The recent addition of the riverwalk makes for a nice stroll between the local shops and restaurants. The city is small enough that you can get from the beach to downtown in 20 minutes. Raleigh is an hour and a half northwest of us, Charlotte is three and a half hours to the west, and Myrtle Beach is an hour south.

Boating on the Intracoastal Waterway is a favorite activity of mine when visiting Wilmington. Figure Eight and Masonboro Island are wonderful escapes if you have access to a boat rental. Be sure to check out Wrightsville Beach when in the area. Trolley Stop Hot Dogs and Roberts Market (try the chicken salad) are beach staples. I suggest renting a bike, taking a surfing or sailing lesson or sitting waterfront at the dockside marina and enjoying their famous Bloody Mary.

Wilmington is a wonderful town to visit any time of year. We have mild winters, and spring is beautiful, as we have azaleas in bloom all over town! I am definitely looking forward to my next visit home!

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.

Why Japan Is Best Explored by Sea with Princess

Japan is a destination that rewards repeat visits because no two regions — or seasons —  feel quite the same. One moment, you’re wandering through centuries-old geisha districts in Kanazawa. The next, you’re watching neon reflections dance across Tokyo streets long after midnight.
