This time last week I was setting sail from Auke Bay in Juneau to spend a sunny day on the waters of Southeast Alaska. The capital city offers endless outdoor adventure opportunities, including whale watching, hiking and helicopter tours over the Mendenhall Glacier, in the beautiful scenery of the Inside Passage. During our family vacation, my brothers, dad and I decided to enjoy a fishing trip on the Lynn Canal with Juneau Adventures, a locally owned charter company operated by Captain Terry. 
The incredible maritime mountain scenery and companionship of my excited family and the very knowledgeable and kind Captain Terry made our time spent on the placid waters of Lynn Canal anything but boring. Nestled in the snowcapped Chilkat Mountains, the inlet is the deepest fjord in North America and one of the longest in the world, stretching for 90 miles. As we cruised to one of the Captain’s favorite spots for halibut fishing, sea lions and seals rose out of the water to check out our boat, and Terry put us right in the middle of some whale-watching action. 
After nibbling on crackers and homemade smoked salmon dip, the fishing started. The four of us each had our own pole; and though I’m the least experienced, I caught the first fish — a huge rockfish that Captain Terry said makes for excellent fish tacos — and the second — a gigantic halibut that took 10 minutes to reel up from 400 feet below. The catch of the day was made by my brother — a 20-pound halibut that we would have liked to ship home to eat but left with Captain Terry for his family to enjoy. 
Our day on the water was capped off with an exciting surprise my family and I will never forget; after Captain Terry threw pieces of bait into the chilly waters, about eight bald eagles flew around us and swooped down close to the boat, putting on an incredible show. A five-hour fishing excursion with Juneau Adventures was the perfect way to spend our day docked in the city, providing a chance to experience rugged Alaska with an expert local! — Monique Barrett, eFlyer editor/associate editor
