My boyfriend Brett’s uncle recently bought a small plane — a Cirrus SR20 (manufactured in my home state of Minnesota) — and is taking flying lessons with an experienced pilot.
As I mentioned in previous blogs, my boyfriend is very busy running an overnight summer camp June through August. When it was time for us to attend our friend’s wedding in Alexandria, Va., this past month, we were working with a small amount of available time.
When we discussed different options for how to get to and from the wedding in the least amount of time, Brett’s uncle chimed in, offering to fly us from Alexandria back to Kunkletown, Pa. After much thought, we decided to go, with the caveat that he bring his instructor along for the ride.
Before we flew, I was terrified. My boyfriend’s uncle needed to know exactly how much each of us weighed, considering the plane could only hold 4,000 pounds, which included the fuel and everything inside right down to the seats. Because the plane was so small, we couldn’t bring any luggage with us.
We took off, and my heart was racing. By the time we reached about 5,000 feet, everything seemed fine, and I got used to being in such a tiny plane. It turned out to be a pretty cool experience.
