I, like all Global Traveler readers, scour the pages of our magazine and website to find the best of the best hotels, airlines and all things global. There is no greater advantage in travel than having an insider’s perspective, found in GT Tested, Bon Vivant and our many destination articles.

In my city of Philadelphia, my inside scoop often comes from my friend and local business owner, Ali McCloud of Arcadia Boutique. A few weeks back I was invited to her husband’s birthday celebration at a new spot in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia. I set out that night with high expectations for the newest thing the McClouds would introduce to me.

Located across the street from the iconic Johnny Brenda’s in Fishtown, I met our group at Frankford Hall. Upon entering, I was immediately taken with the large, open atmosphere, reminiscent of breweries I have visited in Munich. An outdoor gravel courtyard with a fire pit and picnic bench seating caught the eyes of those who didn’t mind braving the cold. Indoors, two ping pong tables and three bars kept visitors warm and entertained.

My party settled at a long picnic table, walking up to the counter to order German fare such as warm Bavarian pretzels, potato pancakes, bratwurst and sauerkraut. We washed down our meal with a large variety of draft beers served in .5L and 1L beer steins.

It was only as the night was coming to a close and I was smitten by my new experience that I learned this restaurant was a creation of Philadelphia restaurateur Steven Starr. I highly recommend anyone in the area to stop by, have a few pints and some great food. Then maybe head over to Johnny Brenda’s and check out a band. The best of new and old in one!
