Have you ever been walking down the street and felt compelled down a different block for no apparent reason? Or have you ever instinctively looked at your window and seen something spectacularly unexpected? I don’t know why things like this happen, but I am one of those people who believes hard work pays off, and some things just happen for a reason. About two weeks ago, I was walking home from running errands, minding my own business, with iPod in one hand and BlackBerry in the other. As usual, I was paying no attention to what was going on around me. I just wanted to get to my apartment building without any distractions. My feet know the way home from Sixth Avenue without me having to think. By now they also know how to avoid the ever-present paparazzi huddled near the hotels on my neighborhood block. On this particular day, I turned my corner and noticed there were not too many people with cameras. When I turned the corner, however, I noticed the longest pair of legs I had ever seen. I looked up to see where the legs ended and found an even longer torso, attached to a handsome face, standing somewhere around six-feet-seven-inches or six-feet-eight-inches. I walked right by, but for some reason, on that particular day, I stopped dead in my tracks and turned around. I looked at him again and noticed he was standing alone with a tennis bag and credentials around his neck. I went over and asked if he was going to the U.S. Open. He politely smiled and said yes. I returned his smile and wished him good luck. He thanked me and I continued on my way. After a few minutes, I was kicking myself for not asking his name, but I figured I would try and find him on TV over the weekend if I happened to watch the Open. I didn’t watch any tennis until last night, when I saw the Men’s Final. I understood then why I turned around that day two weeks ago. I was watching a very tall Argentinean beating the No. 1 player and defending champion Roger Federer. As the final point was played and the new winner was announced, there was no mistaking the smile and shining eyes as the same Juan Martin del Potro I had unknowingly wished good luck on the first day of his tournament play two weeks ago. Congratulations, Juan Martin! –Alex Young, vice president and associate publisher
