It was a frigid cold Saturday night, but I joined thousands to witness the inaugural State Farm Chicago Legends event at the United Center. The NCAA basketball doubleheader featured the hometown Northwestern Wildcats facing the Dayton Flyers and the University of Illinois battling Brigham Young University.

I knew my day would be interesting when I followed legendary broadcaster Les Grobstein into the building. As I walked past the Walls of Legends to courtside, there was a distinct level of building excitement from the fans, staffers and teams.

Northwestern won the first game 67–64, in a game that went right to the wire. NU had an early big lead and hung on for the win. U of I beat BYU 75–73 in another nail-biter. You could not have asked for two more exciting games — having the Illinois teams win both was very special.

All four coaches were gracious and professional post-game, but you can sense NU Coach Chris Collins was especially happy.  This was a huge win for the NU program.

In addition to two thrilling basketball games, a Chicago Legends Selection Committee chose a class of honorees who were recognized during an on-court presentation. DePaul Hall of Fame Coach Ray Meyer — represented by his son Joey — and star player Mark Aguirre were honored as Legends of Chicago Basketball.

This event was run extremely well. It had the perfect balance between nostalgia and the day’s games. There was even an appearance by the Cubs World Series  team — a basketball fan truly could not have asked for more.

There was a feeling of something special at this first Chicago Legends. I see this building into something really big over the next few years. I was excited to be there for the first, and I look forward to being there for many more.
