Every traveler enjoys the occasional staycation as a chance to become better acquainted with the city they call home. WalletHub recently released a study claiming two-thirds of Americans are planning to enjoy a staycation this summer, as many can’t afford to use extra vacation time on long drives or flights, regardless of this year’s many budget-friendly travel options. The study compared 150 U.S. destinations to discover the best staycation spots in the country. Cities were judged based on available recreational activities, food and entertainment and relaxation opportunities. The top spot? Orlando. The following top four contenders were all less than one point apart in rating and were, in order, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Salt Lake City and Scottsdale. Rounding out the top 10 were Atlanta, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, St. Petersburg and Honolulu. Unsurprisingly, some of the country’s top tourist destinations brought up the rear, with Los Angeles rated 143 out of 150, and New York rated 148 out of 150. The study also compiled a few interesting facts for travelers looking for fun things to enjoy in their neck of the woods. The top three cities with the most swimming pools per capita are Cleveland, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. The most tennis courts per capita are found in Norfolk, Va.; Richmond, Va.; and Columbus, Ga. The most public golf courses per capita call Cincinnati, Orlando and Scottsdale home. For the most zoos and aquariums look to Las Vegas, or Orlando for the most ice cream and frozen yogurt retailers. Stay in Portland for the most beer gardens, or San Francisco for the most coffee shops. The most museums per capita are in New Orleans and the most spas per capita are in Las Vegas.
