The buzz surrounding two ONYX hotels in Bangkok couldn’t be more authentic. The launch of the luxury hospitality group’s innovative Plan BEE introduces an ambitious urban beekeeping initiative with a goal of protecting the Asian honeybee from becoming extinct. These pollinators, essential to healthy biodiversity, have become threatened due to factors that include pesticide use and loss of habitat. Through a partnerships with Raitong Organics Farm, ONXY hopes to educate both guests and local farmers on the value of Asian honeybee husbandry and the role of bees in a healthy ecosystem.

Participating hotels include Oriental Residence Bangkok, with an urban beekeeping program under the direction of apiculturists who will oversee the wellbeing of the bees and direct honey harvesting. A similar, rural beekeeping program at Shama Sukhumvit Bangkok will offer professional training to area farmers interested in pursuing apiculture as an additional source of income. Honey from both projects will be incorporated into dishes served at both Café Claire and Mandopop at Oriental Residence Bangkok.
