BA’s Austin Service

Daily / Feature

British Airways launches non-stop service between Austin (AUS) and London (LHR) on March 3, marking the first trans-Atlantic flight for the city. A Boeing 787 Dreamliner will operate on the route, originally scheduled five times weekly before increasing to daily service in May.

Austin passengers will enjoy three classes of service: Club World (business class); World Traveller Plus (premium economy); and World Traveller (economy). Stylish new interiors feature state-of-the-art entertainment systems, meals, snacks, beverages and a generous baggage allowance. Features of the new Dreamliner aircraft include enhanced comfort levels, improved air quality, mood lighting, quieter cabins and lower air pressure.

In celebration of the service, here’s a few fun facts from British Airways about the aircraft, airline and Austin.

  • Austin is British Airways’ 25th North American gateway and third in Texas
  • The 787 has the largest windows of any commercial aircraft
  • Nearly 13 million Ping-Pong balls could fit in the passenger cabin of a 787
  • Up to 500,000 cases of wine are ordered by British Airways for flights every year
  • In January 2000, BA became the world’s first airline to develop and install fully flatbed seats in business class
  • The flight time from Austin to London is nine hours

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
