New flights are helping bump the number of visitors from Japan to Australia. Qantas Airways added new flights from Brisbane to Tokyo, which helped boost visitor numbers between the two countries. And there should be another bump once All Nippon Airways begins their Sydney to Tokyo flights this month.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Japanese visitors to Australia increased 18 percent in September. Overall, the number of international visitors to Australia is growing: The country saw that number increase by 10.4 percent in September.

“Overall, we will see growth of approximately 30 percent in aviation capacity from Japan by the end of this year,” said John O’Sullivan, managing director, Tourism Australia. “Off the back of the recently signed free-trade agreement, we’re definitely seeing momentum from what remains a key market for Australian tourism.”

Australians are heading to Japan at increasing rates, too. More than 30,000 Australians visited Japan in September, representing a 19.5 percent increase from a year ago.

Japan is Australia’s seventh largest tourism market, though it used to be the country’s largest.
