Last month, Atlantis, Paradise Island, one of the most well-known destinations in the Bahamas, announced its efforts to increase sustainability at an “aggressive” rate.

In late April, the resort hosted its first Sawfish Soiree Atlantis, inviting government officials, scientists and other related experts to an event dedicated to conservation of the smalltooth sawfish species. Atlantis proudly claims the title as the only marine habitat in the world to have successfully birthed a critically endangered smalltooth sawfish. The resort boasts a team of more than 150 aquarists, marine biologists and water quality specialists.

The resort continues to reduce single-use plastics and balloons on the property. It banned all plastic straws and balloons, including latex balloons, often considered biodegradable, even though they take up to four years to decompose entirely, putting animals at risk.

Additionally, the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation benefits from all of the resort’s marine interaction programs. The foundation is the resort’s nonprofit, which funds scientific research and community outreach benefitting Caribbean marine wildlife.
