American Airlines launched a pre-flight COVID-19 testing program for travelers heading to Hawai’i and other international destinations.
The initial testing launch will take place at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport for American Airlines’ passengers traveling to Hawai’i and Costa Rica Oct. 15. Following next week’s initial testing, American Airlines will introduce the same procedures at Miami International Airport. Tests will be available to American Airlines travelers flying to the Bahamas, Costa Rica and Jamaica.
The airline will also expand the offering by working with CARICOM, a community of 20 Caribbean countries.
“We applaud American’s efforts to develop a COVID-19 testing program for international travel and we are proud to partner with the airline to include Costa Rica in their initial launch,” said Gustavo Segura Sancho, Minister of Tourism, Costa Rica. “Initiatives like these are crucial for the recovery of tourism in Costa Rica, an important economic engine for our country, while ensuring passenger health and safety.”
Testing must be completed within 72 hours of the final leg of departure and uploaded to the Costa Rica’s Health Pass. Residents and tourists with proof of a negative COVID-19 test can bypass Costa Rica’s 14-day quarantine. See all of Costa Rica’s COVID-19 protocols and safety regulations here.
American Airlines’ customers will be responsible for testing costs. American partnered with LetsGetChecked, CareNow and DFW.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
