As of last month, American Airlines’ 70,000 employees have begun sporting new uniforms for the first time in nearly 30 years.

The world’s largest commercial airline has also instituted a coherent look for all of its employees. After its merger with US Airways, American’s pilots, flight attendants and ticket and gate agents all wore various uniforms inherited by the two carriers. Now, they’re all wearing the same one.

The new digs utilize a color palette incorporating gray, cobalt and white, which combines colors from both brands.

“It really shows us as one brand. And that was really the only thing that was still kind of lagging behind for customers — being able to see that come together. It’s a huge milestone for us,” aid Brady Byrnes, director of global marketing, American Airlines in USA Today.

US Airways had not updated its uniforms in more than 10 years and American hadn’t since the 1980s.

US Airways last updated its uniforms more than a decade ago and American hadn’t had a makeover since the 1980s. “There have been some new ties and scarves, but we’ve pretty much been in the same clothing on the legacy AA side for greater than 25 years,” Byrnes said.

The airline relied on employee feedback in the design process, overseen by corporate apparel company Twin Hill. American also partnered with Cole Haan to create a line of accessories, including custom-designed handbags to pair with the tablets the service crews use in flight.
