American Airlines is extending Boeing 737 Max flight cancellations until Nov. 2. There’s speculation the embattled plane may not return to passenger service until 2020.

American Airlines said it “remains confident that impending software updates to the Boeing 737 Max, along with the new training elements Boeing is developing in coordination with our union partners, will lead to recertification of the aircraft this year.” The carrier said the decision to delay using the plane until November is so “our customers and team members can more reliably plan their upcoming travel on American.”

This means about 115 flights will be canceled per day until Nov. 2. Earlier last month, Southwest Airlines said it expects to remove the 737 Max from its flying schedules beyond Oct. 1.

According to The Wall Street Journal, “an increasing number of government and industry officials” say the 737 Max is unlikely to return to service until next year. “The situation remains fluid, no firm timeline has been established and Boeing still has to satisfy U.S. regulators that it has answered all outstanding safety questions.”
