Aloft Introduces Voice-Activated Features

Guests at Aloft Hotels can now use in-room iPads installed with a custom Aloft app to control their guestroom, from the temperature to the lighting, just by talking to Apple’s Siri feature. The feature is currently up and running at Aloft Boston Seaport and Aloft Santa Clara. “Forget the phrase ‘at the touch of your fingertips.’ Today’s early adopter, hyper-connected global traveler wants a level of personalization unlike ever before, and that means being able to control their hotel experience with the sound of their voice. We’re thrilled to be the first hotel brand to bring voice-activation to our guests in this way, using Siri to control room temperature, lighting and more during their stay,” said Brian McGuinness, global brand leader, Aloft Hotels. “At Aloft, we are constantly pushing the envelope, our imaginations and the adaptation of technology to reinvent the hotel stay of today and tomorrow. We love working with companies like DigiValet to help bring our visions to life. The new Aloft Voice Activated Hotel Rooms are going to change the way that our guests interact, literally, with their room during their stay with us. It’s the latest way Aloft is changing the way we all travel,” said Sarah Downing, vice president, global guest initiatives and innovation, Aloft Hotels. Upon arrival, guests launch the app on the in-room iPad, setting the device to recognize their voice and learning about the various features available. If guests so wish, they can sign into their iTunes account on the iPad, enabling the device to play a certain playlist or song, just by asking. Using the app, Siri also acts as a virtual concierge. In-room iPads additionally allows for internet browsing and other app usage. All devices reset at the end of each stay, wiping all personal preferences. Newsletter sign-up

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.

Why Japan Is Best Explored by Sea with Princess

Japan is a destination that rewards repeat visits because no two regions — or seasons —  feel quite the same. One moment, you’re wandering through centuries-old geisha districts in Kanazawa. The next, you’re watching neon reflections dance across Tokyo streets long after midnight.
