Allianz Study: Americans Change Travel Due To Terrorism

Sep 17, 2016
Daily

According to a study by Allianz Global Assistance, approximately 86 percent of Americans are concerned regarding a terrorist attack while traveling. The regions sparking the most fear are the Middle East and Europe. Following this year’s terrorist activities in Europe, about 22 percent of Americans say the attacks influence their upcoming travel plans. Most admit these changes include canceling travel altogether, while others simply change their travel destination, travel dates, mode of transportation or accommodations. A small amount purchased additional travel insurance. Americans changing their travel destinations to avoid terrorist threats are choosing to stay within the United States or Canada; those traveling to Europe are the most likely to pick a new destination. When traveling abroad, more baby boomers and members of generation X than millennials fear a terrorist attack. When traveling domestically, however, the trend is reversed, with 57 percent of millennials fearing a terrorist attack within the United States, while older generations do not see U.S. terrorism as a large threat. Regardless, European travel as a whole increased by 10 percent over the summer, with more than 500,000 U.S. travelers visiting the continent. “What we’re seeing is that the American traveler is a complex demographic that shares common fears and concerns, but deviate greatly on where they find those fears and how they face them. But we’re pleased to see that whatever those differences are, one thing that remains consistent is that they are finding ways to follow their passion of seeing the world despite the challenges that come with traveling in a time of terror,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications, Allianz Global Assistance USA. High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
