All Nippon Airways Introduces Doctor On Board Service

Jun 25, 2016
Daily

All Nippon Airways will begin a new program, ANA Doctor On Board, starting in September on international flights. In the event of a medical emergency during flight, rather than crew requesting a doctor over the cabin speaker, unnecessarily alerting or worrying unaffected passengers, crew can immediately seek the assistance of pre-approved physicians on-board. The program, which asks traveling physicians to register with the airline ahead of time, aims to provide more rapid emergency response. Physicians can register for the program as early as July, for flights beginning in September. Both doctors and passengers will also now have more information on medical supplies available during their flight, to better assist those with existing injuries or medical conditions. Crew will also carry tablets installed with a language translation software which includes medical terms, in order for crew members, doctors and passengers to communicate efficiently and effectively. The airline hopes the software will be up and running by October with 17 languages available. Registration for the program is completely voluntary and traveling physicians are in no way obligated to participate. For those who are interested, registration requires proof of a medical license and an ANA Mileage Club membership. After the program debuts, if there is a medical emergency on a flight where there are no registered doctors, crew members will follow traditional procedures. Under the program, if any passenger files a claim of injury or damage as a result of in-flight medical treatment, All Nippon Airways will solely handle the claims, barring cases of willful or gross negligence by the acting doctor. High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
