Airlines Restrict Lounge Access To Prevent Overcrowding

Higher membership prices and more restrictive policies are recent measures some U.S. carriers are introducing in an effort to reduce crowding in airport lounges. Delta Air Lines upped the cost of lounge access by 54 percent last year, while United Airlines plans to cut back next year by restricting access to only passengers with same-day boarding passes.

In addition to increasing costs, Delta also started to exclude complimentary guest access as a benefit of the American Express Platinum and American Express Delta Reserve cards. The policy changes were introduced “to maintain the Club’s exclusive atmosphere,” according to an email Delta sent to members of its SkyMiles frequent-flyer loyalty program.

In a similar move, United Airlines recently debuted signs in airports across its network stating “all United Club customers, including members, will only be eligible to access United Club locations if they have a same-day boarding pass” from Aug. 18, 2016. Under the terms of the new change, passengers connecting on overnight flights or on a red-eye will no longer have access to United Club lounges.

Global Traveler reached out to United for clarification on the terms of this new policy and the reasoning behind this change. According to Jennifer Dohm, media relations manager, United Airlines, the airline is introducing the change in order “to reduce crowding and make the overall club experience more relaxing for passengers traveling through the airport.”

Passengers with same-day boarding passes from any airline will still have access to United lounges when the change is implemented.

Have you visited a United or Delta lounge recently and noticed overcrowding? How was your experience? Email us. Please include your full name and location with your email.
